Turning 40: Celebrating with Fiber Art Tools from 1984
Today is a special day for me—it's my 40th birthday! While I know many crafters who have been creating for longer than I've been alive, I still feel the gravitas of this particular birthday. As I reflect on this milestone, I can't help but draw parallels between myself and the vintage fiber art equipment that has become an integral part of my creative journey. One such piece is my early 80's Brother knitting machine. Much like me as I get older, this machine is temperamental and demands extra care and patience.
The Frustrations of Vintage Equipment
My Brother knitting machine has seen its fair share of projects over the decades. It's a reliable workhorse when it's in a good mood, but it has its quirks. Sometimes, it skips stitches or jams unexpectedly, requiring me to stop and figure out what went wrong. It can be incredibly frustrating, especially when I'm in the middle of a creative flow. But these moments have taught me the value of patience and perseverance. Just like this knitting machine, I too need a bit more TLC as I navigate the complexities of life as I get older.
The Challenges and Joys of Adaptation
Using vintage equipment like my counterbalance loom also comes with its own set of challenges. This loom, with its intricate system of pulleys, requires a deep understanding and a gentle touch. It doesn’t have the sleek efficiency of modern looms, but there's something profoundly satisfying about working with it. Each project on the loom feels like a collaboration between the past and the present, a dance of tradition and innovation.

Despite the struggles, there's immense joy in adapting and upgrading these vintage tools. I've spent countless hours fine-tuning the loom, replacing old parts, and making small adjustments to improve its performance. I even added a shed regulator of my own design and a tension brake. Each upgrade not only enhances the functionality of the equipment but also strengthens my connection to the craft. There's a sense of accomplishment in breathing new life into these timeless tools, much like finding new ways to navigate the challenges and joys of my own life.
Embracing the Journey
As I celebrate my birthday today, I'm reminded that both I and my vintage fiber art equipment have stories to tell. We've both weathered the test of time, evolving and adapting along the way. The temperamental nature of my knitting machine and the intricate demands of my counterbalance loom mirror the complexities of my own journey. Through the frustrations and the triumphs, I've learned to embrace the imperfections and find beauty in the process.
Here's to turning 40 and celebrating the fiber art tools that are as old as I am or even older. They remind me that age is not a barrier but a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the enduring joy of creation. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I look forward to many more years of crafting, learning, and growing together.
